Malawi Visit and New Friends

The villages and people of Malawi were a part of Dan and Irene's life for a few weeks in Fall '16. Let's introduce a few of them...

Meet Lenard:  Lenard is an industrious young man.  He is 13 years old, has been orphaned for 2 years, and is blind in one eye after an injury from a goat horn. During a lunch feeding program he was identified as one who would benefit from farming instruction, so he was able to take a Foundation for Farming course Stand as One offers in Nkhoma.  He is starting with a 20 x 20 plot, growing mustard, lettuce, beans, and maize.  Lenard must carry the daily need of 120 litres of water from the well that is 1.5 kms away.  His knowledge of nutritional balance and of composting has already impacted his community.

Meet Malekano:  Malekano is 8 months old.  She is in the care of her aunt after her mother died in childbirth. She needed help, so came to the Africare home to ask for baby food. We have since been supplying Lactogen milk powder for her.  We are so impressed with this aunt!  She is responsible for the care of 8 children and 2 adults. When the Aunt walks the 1 1/2 hours to pick this up she also attends a training session on "Farming God's Way".  She needs to grow enough food for all of them to survive, last years crop only produced 5 bags of maize. Not enough!  With her training she is now renting a small plot, blanketing the soil with organic matter, creating compost, and is on her way to supporting her large family.

Meet Zione:  Zione is on her own.  She is 33 years old with 5 children, including infant twins.  She had no food.  She was creating tension in her village because she would continually beg the other villagers for food, of which they had none to spare.  Nicole got involved to provide her with baby food.  In order to join this Stand as One feeding program Zione also needed to attend the Farming training. After one season of using the recommended techniques she harvested a bumper crop of maize!

Meet Adam:  Adam was also involved in an out of school program that identified him as one who would be a good farmer.  He is 13 years old.  He has had 3 months of training.  His mother has given him a small piece of land to try his sustainable techniques, but she is not willing to change her own farming ways... yet.  Crop failure here means death, and she needs more proof before she will trust these new methods.  We expect Adam's success to start the convincing!

Meet Happiness:  This small family is made up of Happiness, who is 7 years old, her younger sister Vanessa, and their mother Iness.  Happiness won our hearts with her easy companionship. Unfortunately, as happens too often, her mother is now fully blind and dying of HIV.  This is their home.  Our team was able to pray over her and her children for the miracle of healing and for peace.  Nicole is visiting them once a week, they are in the Stand As One feeding program, and we will ensure there is continued love and care for these girls.
