Check out the impact our soy feeding program is having in Calcutta, India!
Why Soy milk?
by Shaji Amos, Director of Kolkata City Mission (pictured above)
Soy Milk is a great alternative to regular milk. It delivers a high dose of essential fatty acids, proteins, fibre, vitamins, and minerals that support basic body functions and promote a more efficient metabolism. Soy milk is also high in antioxidants and phytosterols, which help strengthen the immune system and protect the body from various diseases. Therefore, KCM chooses Soy milk as the best alternative and nutritious drink for children living in a poverty!
Women who live in the slums and are part of our Self Help Group (SHG) make the soy milk by grinding soy beans that have been soaked in water for several hours. The ground soy is subsequently processed through a high pressured steam cooker to produce this amazing product. Today, KCM supplies soy milk to 500 children living in three different slums in Calcutta. Together with Stand as One Ministry this program saves a child from poverty one glass at a time.
- Employment! Jobs for eight women living in the slums which give them the ability to help feed their families
- Dignity! The community is proud of their small milk factory and others are taking notice, they even had a visit by the State Health Minister!
- Education! The children have more energy and they are now able to walk to school and play with other children. For some of the kids living in the Mudapara slum, soy milk is the only nutrition they receive during the day until their parents return from work later in the evening.
We are extremely thankful to Stand as One Ministry for setting up the soy milk project and supporting Kolkata City Mission. We feel very blessed to be part of this partnership!
